Welcome to Geography!

Our Geography curriculum is intentionally knowledge-rich, ensuring that learning is meticulously specified, coherently sequenced, and cumulatively built over time. As children progress through our school, they do not simply memorise facts; they know more, remember more, and deepen their understanding of our interconnected world.

Core Curriculum Principles
  • High Rigor: Our curriculum systematically meets and exceeds the requirements of the National Curriculum, leaving nothing to chance.
  • Conceptual Depth: Learning is anchored in four core geographical concepts: Place, Space, Environment, and Interconnection.
  • Disciplinary Expertise: We explicitly teach children how to think like geographers—exploring the work of historic explorers, analyzing migration, and evaluating the impacts of colonialism.
The Spatial Sense Framework
Every academic year begins with a dedicated ‘Spatial Sense’ unit. By explicitly teaching technical, disciplinary skills at the very start of the year, we equip pupils with the tools they need to unlock the rest of our curriculum.
  • Key Stage 1: Hands-on fieldwork and observational mapping of the school and immediate local environment.
  • Lower Key Stage 2: Mastering compass skills, digital mapping, ordnance survey keys, scale, and elevation.
  • Upper Key Stage 2: Interpreting complex climate graphs, population data, coordinates, and utilising Geographical Information Systems (GIS). This culminates in Year 5 with an advanced fieldwork project investigating a real-world issue in our local area.
Rationale & Regional Progression

British Geography (Every Year)
Children build an incremental mental map of home, moving from the foundational countries of the UK to detailed regional studies of the South West, South East, Yorkshire, the Midlands, and Northern Ireland. They analyse topographical features, landscape formation, and modern land use.

European Geography (Years 2, 3 & 4)
Pupils explore Mediterranean, Western, and Eastern Europe. They examine regional climates, trade, and industry while making direct comparative studies to their local area. These units also build crucial cross-curricular schemas, providing foundational context for their studies of the Vikings in History.

World Geography & Globalisation
Children extend their horizons across North and South America, Asia, Africa, and Oceania. Applying their understanding of latitude, longitude, and time zones, they analyse diverse biomes, tectonic activity, settlements, and resource distribution.

The Capstone: Year 6 Globalisation
Our curriculum culminates in the Summer term of Year 6 with a sophisticated unit on Globalisation. Pupils synthesise their entire primary geography knowledge, using global data and professional GIS software to critically evaluate social, economic, and political globalisation. Our pupils leave us prepared for Key Stage 3, carrying a deep commitment to sustainability, equity, and global citizenship.
